Dear Elijah

*Warning: Sentimental post with accompanying song ahead. When I listened to the words of this Randy Travis song, I was practically bawling... You know me, Elijah, I am a sap!

Dear Elijah,

I have been wanting to tell you something all day, but time got away from me and now you're sound asleep after a grueling basketball practice. I know you read my blog when I'm not looking sometimes, and I hope you read it today.

I read somewhere that one of the best things you can do for your children is to let them overhear you praising them to someone else.

As you know, I have a lot of great blog friends. And right now, I am singing your praises to them, all over the blogosphere.

I know Gabe gets a lot of attention and air-time on my blog. You have to admit, he's a pretty funny kid who says a lot of blog-worthy things. And Isabel just recently had a birthday, so she got her time in the proverbial limelight as well.

Now it's your turn, buddy.

Today, when you were home on a two-hour delay, do you know how you made my heart swell with pride when you deliberately sought out your baby brother to play with you? And again, when Gabe said something funny and you looked over at me so we could share the joke? You have been such a great big brother lately, and it does a mom good to see her kids love each other like that.

You amaze me in so many ways. Your ability to kick my you-know-what on the guitar (on the hardest level) when we play Rock Band. Your athletic abilities in every sport you play (hello, a left-handed Little League pitcher is a hot commodity!). Your knowledge of football that goes beyond even what your dad knows. Your unfailing love and support of me, even when I have sent you to your room in a fit of anger.

Elijah, I love you so much. You were my first, my "experiment". If you see me doing things differently with your younger brother and sister, it's because I have found a better way in my (old) age. Thanks for being such a great kid. I love spending time with you, even if it's just being alone for a few minutes on the way to and from basketball practice somedays.

You are growing up to be an amazing young man, I can see it a little more everyday. I hope you realize just how very much you mean to me.

Now, stop playing that video game and come help me with supper!
(Just kidding.)
Love,
Mom

Yup, I know that kid. He is pretty cool.

I wish I would have been able to spend time with your kids when they were little like you did with mine. Guess that is the advantage of being the youngest. And you always lived so far away.

We did have fun the summer you lived around the corner didn't we! We still do of course, but you know what I mean.

Anyway, give that kid a big juicy kiss from Aunt Chelle, I know he will love that.

Awww...sweet words from a sweet mama to her sweet baby boy.

Elijah, your mama says you rock and from what I know of your mama she is a great judge of character. Never stop remembering how much you love your family right now and always remember that your place is always going to be special in her heart because you are her first. I know, I'm a mama too.

Now, since you've got her all mushy, get her to make you some really awesome dessert.

Awww...that is so sweet. And just when I thought I had gotten out of crying in the morning.

But you are so right...that praise is so very important. And I'll have to remember the overhearing part. Though my kids are quite the experts at listening in where they are not supposed to.

That is a really sweet post. It's interesting that your son's name is Elijah. That's my son's middle name, he is also the oldest, and BOTH my grandfathers' names. One day I spent the entire day writing the stories of the day(s) they were born (I have 3). I tried to remember every little detail about what happened, what I did, what I was thinking, etc. and when they got home from school I read it to them. They loved it way more than I thought they would. Elijah will love this post way more than you think he will.

There's nothing like that first boy. I know what you mean by "experiment". My son is my first and I know we've made a lot of mistakes with him. It's all trial and error.
Praise, praise, praise. That's so important. Catch them doing something good.

Ok you should have warned me more!! My oldest is gone right now and I never sleep well or relax until he comes home. I posted him today, must be "first-born" day!
There's just something about the "first's". I love how you said "experiment" cause that is sooooo true!

What a great letter to Elijah! I'm sure he'll appreciate reading all these wonderful words.

Randy Travis has a lot of great songs, Angels is just one of them.

Oh Heather. What a sweet post. Even if he doesn't read this, you should print out a copy and put it in his baby book to read later in life.

That is so wonderful and so great. I need to go give my kids some extra loving.
It is so fun to see them turning into amazing smaller versions of incredible people. As the mom you get to take alot of the credit....the first is always the hardest but the one that seems to know that you are just winging this parent thing.♥

Girl. You are killing me. I am a blubbering mess.
Every child should get a letter like this once a year from their parents.

From one mom to another, you are a true inspiration.

Hi Heather. I just left another comment on your sister's blog. She suggested we all get together at J.Alexander's. We could come up with a crazy name like bloghogs or something maybe not so nasty. Blogkittens? My EMail address is picky_wawoo@hotmail.com. Bloglovelies? Blogbabes? I'll keep thinking. Bloghotties?
